ICA and Tsunami Reconstruction![]()
A Tsunami or massive tidal wave hit Southeast Asia on Sunday, 26 December 2004. The co-operative movements most directly affected included those of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and India, although co-operative members in Malaysia and Thailand as well as others have also been effected by the disaster. ICA and its individual member organisations immediately took action bringing disaster relief as well as preparing for a longer-term reconstruction process. ICA made an appeal and collected funds to finance reconstruction activities. Today, ICA has made an assesment of needs. It will finance some activities through the ICA Tsunami Reconstruction Fund to which a large number of co-operative organisations and individuals contributed. It is also seeking partners to implement the reconstruction projects. Through its regional office for Asia and the Pacific, ICA will also continue to provide assistance to the movements effected.
Finally, ICA is committed to playing a co-ordinating role for the reconstruction efforts by collecting and disseminating information among development agencies. It also is informing the movement on progress through the ICA Digest.
