About ICA Africa

ICA Africa is the regional office of the International Co-operative Alliance (ICA) serving ICA member organisations who are based in Africa. The Regional office was established in the year 2004 with the merging of the two sub-regional offices one for East Central and Southern Africa and the other one for Western Africa. The aim of merging the offices was a strategic move repositioning the office in line with similar Regional offices in Europe, asia pacific and Americas. prior to the merger of the regional office to the current status, ICA Regional office for East, central and South African (ROECSA) had existed since 1968, while the Western African Regional office 9ROWA) had been in existence since 1975.

Mission

The ICA-Africa shall strive to promote and strengthen the Co-operative Movement in the region and provide services to co-operatives.

Objectives

  • Promote the Co-operative Movement in Africa.
  • Promote and protect Co-operative Values and Principles;
  • Facilitate the development of economic and other mutually beneficial relations between its member organisations;
  • Promote sustainable human development and to further the economic and social progress of people, thereby contributing to peace and security in Africa;
  • Promote equality between men and women in all decision-making and activities within the Co-operative Movement;
  • To lobby for enabling environment for co-operative development in Africa.

ICA Africa Rules

The ICA Africa Rules were initially adopted on 24 November 2005. They were revised and approved by the ICA Regional Assembly for Africa in October 2010 and are now consistent with the ICA Statutes and Bye-Laws which will came into force on 1 January 2009.

The Governance Structure of ICA-Africa

The Region is managed by an elected Regional Board and Regional Director supported by a team of professional staff in-charge of Strategy, Administration, Projects and Programmes.

Muchiri

Stanley Charles Muchiri
Mr Muchiri was elected as ICA Africa President and ratified as the ICA Vice-President for Africa by the ICA General Assembly in Oslo in September 2003. He is currently Chair of the Co-operative Bank of Kenya.

Members of the ICA Africa Board

The Regional Board oversees the working and activities of ICA Africa. Presided by Stanley Charles Muchiri, members include:

  • Mr. Nimrod Wambete, , Chair, Uganda Co-operative Alliance (UCA)
  • Mr A. P. M. Kavishe, Chair, Kilimanjaro Native Co-operative Union, Tanzania
  • Mr Japheth A. Magomere, Chair, The Co-operative Insurance Company of Kenya
