Co-operatives internationally have a major role to play in the challenge of confronting the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Why should co-operatives be interested in HIV/AIDS? Partly because, as this report documents, co- operatives themselves face difficulties and challenges directly as a result of HIV/AIDS. But the primary reason is because co-operatives, as democratic member-led businesses, subscribe to a set of beliefs which give them a particular reason to want to address the issue of HIV/AIDS. The Statement of Co-operative Identity, adopted in 1995 by the International Co-operative Alliance and recognized worldwide as the defining document of the modern co-operative movement, includes among the declared co-operative values those of social responsibility and caring for others.
