General Information

This section will provide more general information regarding development of housing cooperatives with information that is applicable in many different countries.
This publication produced by CHF International, with funding from USAID, chronicles the history of co-operative housing. In particular it focuses on the USA and the Phillippines.Click here to read the publication.
The Sourcebooks were prepared by the National Confederation of Cooperatives (NATCCO) with funding by CHF Philippines in 2004. The Sourcebooks reviews the experience of the NATCCO Housing Cooperative Program in the Philippines from 1998 to 2003. Divided into five sections, the Sourcebooks also provides NATCCO cooperatives with a step-by-step guide on how to start a housing project, financial management and savings mobilization, preparing technical plans and legal documentary requirements, construction management, and project sustainability. CHF International provided technical assistance to the Philippine National Housing Authority (NHA) for several years to develop a cooperative housing program model for the country. The government wanted to capitalize on an existing, already vibrant “multi-purpose” cooperative sector to develop cooperative housing for low- to moderate-income families.

Produced by the Rural Business and Cooperative Development Service in the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) this Service Report entitled "44 Keys to Successful Cooperative Housing in Rural Areas" contains some practices and attributes associated with successfully developing and operating a housing cooperative are reviewed. Included are practices useful in planning and organizing cooperatives, as well as policies and procedures to help established housing cooperatives remain financially sound and responsive to member needs. Although this guide was written with cooperatives geared toward low-income residents in mind, these keys to success can be applied to any type of housing cooperative. The purpose of this guide is to highlight some methods practiced by successful housing cooperatives. It is not intended as a comprehensive manual. More detailed information about the operation of cooperative housing can be found by contacting the sources listed on page 11. Although it contains information particularly aimed at the United States the guide contains information useful for other rural and indeed urban housing cooperatives.
