The residents of 400 dwelling units in dilapidated blocks of flats in a vandalized run-down area, called “little Chicago” Mannheim, Germany, got together in 1990 to try to persuade the city council to abandon their plans to demolish and rebuild the blocks since this would dramatically increase their rent levels and was seen as a waste of resources since it would create no extra houses. Straw-bale Housing Cooperative in Germany awarded World Habitat Award

Situated in the rural Altmark area of former East Germany, Sieben Linden is a community-initiated eco-village based on principles of self-sufficiency and self-determination, with accommodation for 300 people on completion. The buildings have been constructed using straw-bale, timber and clay and include the largest straw-bale building in Europe: a three storey apartment block for 20 people, and the first in Germany to receive full regulatory approval.

It was a Finalist in 2007 for the World Habitat Awards.

Cooperative UFAMA al SUR, Montevideo, Uruguay

Cooperative UFAMA al SUR is a mutual help housing project involved in the conversion of a derelict building in central Montevideo into 36 apartments by a cooperative of Afro-Uruguayan women-headed households. Initiated by the local community-based organisation Mundo Afro, this innovative project addresses the issue of derelict buildings in central areas of the city, allows for the incremental improvement of flats and promotes social integration as well as racial and gender equality.

It was a finalist in 2006 for the World Habitat Awards.
