Rifkin's warning: act now on grid 'or risk survival'

International economist jeremy Rifkin says co-operatives can play an integral role in a global strategy to revolutionise the energy market. Rifkin is calling for the establishment of co-operative taskforces to establish a plan to implement his renewable energy regime. "We need to see this moving very aggressively in the coming 12 to 24 months because we are running out of time, "says Rifking. "Fossil fuel prices are so volatile, nuclear has gone, we have climate change right on our doorstep now....we've got to take action." The May edigest examines the potential role of co-ops in a "people-led revolution" to change current energy production and consumption behaviour.

Co-operatives Europe forms energy policy group

CO-OPERATIVES Europe (CE) has set up an Energy Policy Group to develop an energy strategy for European co-operatives. CE was one of a group, including the five major political groups in the European Parliament, to support a progressive, decentralised energy plan for Europe.
