President's Page - Ivano Barberini

Ivano Barberini was ICA's president from October 2005 to 6 May 2009. Lauded for his extraordinary contribution to the co-operative movement and to the ICA itself, he was posthumously presented with the ICA 2009 Rochdale Pioneer Award at the ICA General Assembly on 20 November 2009. The Award was presented by Juan Somavia, Director-General of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), to Ivano Barberini's wife, Nerina and his daughter Silvia.

A foundation - Fundazione Ivano Barberini - was established to promote research on the economic and social importance and contribution of the co-operative form of enterprise in meeting the development needs of contemporary society. More information: www.fondazionebarberini.it


Black ribbonGeneva, 7 May 2009 -- It is with great sadness that the ICA announces the death of its president, Ivano Barberini.  Mr. Barberini died peacefully at home after a long illness on 6 May 2009.  Mr. Barberini was the pillar of the global co-operative movement, committed to its values and principles, who worked continuously until the day before his passing to promote the co-operative movement. 

The ICA wishes to express its sincerest condolences to the Barberini family and in particular to his wife, daughter and grandchildren.  

A commemorative service was held on Friday, 8 May at the at Legacoop Emilia-Romagna in Bologna, Italy and was followed by a private funeral, as requested by his family.

Biography

Mr Barberini was elected as ICA President by the General Assembly in Seoul in 2001 when he was President of Lega Nazionale delle Cooperative e Mutue (Legacoop). He was unanimously re-elected as ICA President in 2005 for a a four-year term which would have ended in November 2009.

Mr. Barberini had more than forty years of experience in the Italian, European and international co-operative movement. Born in 1939 in Modena, Italy, Mr Barberini began his co-operative career in the Italian consumer co-operative sector holding a number of positions including manager of Coop Modena, President of Coop Italia, based in Bologna, and President of Coop Emilia Veneto. From 1978 to 1996 was president of COOP, the National Association of Consumers' Co-operatives of Italy and from 1990 to 1996 President of EuroCoop, the European association of consumer co-operatives. He was also elected in 1996 as President of Legacoop, a multisectoral organisation which represents over 10,000 co-operatives with more than 5 million members, a post which he held until 2002. While ICA President, Mr. Barberini also was President of the Istituto di Ricerche Internazionali Archivio Disarmo, a research centre founded in 1982 which studies the problems of disarmament, peace and security, both nationally and internationally.

Mr Barberini was very active through his life promoting co-operative values and principles and encouraging collaboration among co-operatives. He was also involved in solidarity actions for developing countries and emergency aid as well in promoting co-operative development around the world.

Ivano Barberini passed away on 6 May 2009.
