Cooperatives pledge to promote gender equality in Costa Rica

25 Aug 2016

Around 39 organisations, among them co-operatives, media outlets, universities, municipalities, public institutions and private companies signed a document of intent, in which they pledge to improve working conditions and gender equality. For this they will allow the Costa Rican Institute of Accreditation (ECA) and the National Institute of Women (Inamu) to assess them to determine whether they have the required administrative systems in place to enable gender equality.

The accreditation will be called the Gender Equality Seal and consists in the implementation of an administrative system so that the company, entity or institution implements an administrative system for gender equality with which they aim to eliminate the gap between men and women, increasing productivity and value added.

Through raising awareness and information, the project aims to equip the participating entities with the tools that they need to apply to detect instances where equality is undermined, and enable those women to break boundaries, which will increase productivity and competition.

The signing of the document took place as part of the meeting of the High-level Panel for Women’s Empowerment, which was attended by the President of the republic, Luis, Guillermo Solís; second vice-president, Ana Helena Chacón, minister of Status od Women, Alejandra Mora; executive director of UN Women, Phumzile Mlambo; and chief executive of Ikea, Simona Scarpaleggia.
