2020 International Day of Cooperatives Celebration

International Day of Cooperatives

To celebrate the 2020 International Day of Cooperatives, the ICA and The Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) hosted a webinar under the theme – Cooperatives for Climate Action  to support Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13 on Climate Action. The discussion was about the contribution of cooperatives to combating climate change as one of the most severe challenges facing our planet in the 21st century.

The webinar was attended by almost 200 people from 40 countries, and they heard from representatives from cooperatives, governments, international organisations and multilateral entities on how together cooperatives can build back better and take action against climate change.

The celebration featured the screening of a short documentary produced by Aroundtheworld.coop under #coops4dev illustrating the Creando Conciencia cooperative, who are fighting ecological and social injustice through decent work in the Benavidez district in the greater Buenos Aires, Argentina. The presentations followed by an interactive discussion on expanding the impact of cooperatives worldwide in the field of climate action. You can read the full report of the webinar here.

To continue the conversation around climate change and engaging communities to take action, this year the ICA launched a campaign to encourage cooperative movement to share their #Coops4ClimateAction stories. Campaign elements include an interactive map developed in collaboration with DotCoop that visually displays cooperatives around the world who are taking action; a short video that includes inspirational messages from cooperative movement, and a video message from ICA president Ariel Guarco

About the International Day of Cooperatives

The United Nations International Day of Cooperatives is celebrated annually on the first Saturday of July to increase awareness on cooperatives and highlight the complementary goals, objectives and contributions of the United Nations and the international cooperative movement. Each year the theme for this event is set through COPAC, a multi-stakeholder partnership of global public and private institutions that champions and supports people-centred and self-sustaining cooperative enterprises as leaders in sustainable development.
